Using storytelling to assist children in Australian schools and the community!
2017 Awardee of Merit in the Women in Business Awards’ community dedication category, 2018 Wonderful Women of Waterford and 2018 Local Logan Hero recipient, art therapist and youth program coordinator Fiona Ware has built her books ‘Charming Charlie and the Spectacular Sophia’ and ‘Sophia and Charlie and the In-Betweens’ on 30 years’ experience in youth work and working with children in art therapy. The novels are for ages 8 to 10 and 10 to 12 years. ‘Charming Charlie and the Spectacular Sophia’ is accompanied by a curriculum-based student workbook.
Fiona developed strategies during the early 2000s when she worked with teenagers who had been excluded from schools, culminating in her 2005 AFI nominated short film Different = Me. Together with the young people she went on to produce another film in 2007 in Logan, about the impact of bullying called ‘Walk in My Shoes’ along with an accompanying workshop and resources which she presented to over 2,500 people from schools and community organizations around Australia for a period of 3 years.
Giving young people a voice turns lives around. She said, ‘Sharing their authentic stories of trauma and hope in a safe environment really helped people to understand the impact of bullying and how to get through it. The young people in the film and myself received over 500 letters of thanks from teachers, parents, social workers, therapists and other young people.’
